Special instructions for Pegasus, Netscape Mail and Eudora
This mail server has been running anti-virus software to protect our customers since
Aug 1999, the day that the Melissa Virus came out.
We do this to help protect our customers from catching computer viruses.
Some people don't understand the BIG benefit this provides. In the least, it prevents $75 computer repair bills.
Here is a list of the viruses that it stopped - only for the months of
June and July 2002.
About the Primary Mail Server:
The older Email Server was built in 1995 and was quite advanced for its time.
(For instance, Microsoft didn't include TCP/IP (Internet Protocol) in Windows95 until April 1997 - 2 years later!)
The older Server did all kinds of neat things, but it doesn't do HTML formatted email. (The straw the broke the
camel's back...)
Since Microsoft has decided to set HTML formatted email as the default, 80% of the people in the world don't know
how to change it to Plain Text, the way it used to be.
In addition, the AOL email software does not adhere to the industry-standard RFC Specifications, so special programming
was required to read emails originating from AOL.
All of those Outlook Express viruses that you heard about can run in any html page - including html-formatted emails.
While using Netscape email set to view html format can also infect your computer, the best solution is to also
have virus protection installed, in addition to 1USA's virus protection.
The Email server here will
allow you to read everyone's HTML-formatted emails while STILL providing anti-virus protection for your computer.
This Email Server blocks the viruses just as the old Email Server did.
You STILL need anti-virus protection for your computer to prevent viruses coming in via other methods. 1USA recommends
PC-Cillin.
It is more efficient and uses half the memory of other antivirus products.
If you have any difficulty reading your email, call 610-678-2300.

Quick Notification |
When you send out an email, other servers take up to 10 hours to notify you that
you accidentally typed in the wrong email address. |
|
Mail Retrieval |
Users can use POP3 and IMAP4 clients to retrieve their Email. |
|
Message Lifetime |
If the messages in an individual's mailbox are older than a specified number of days, they will get deleted. The current setting is 45 days. Most ISPs save only 14 days. |
|
Mailbox Lifetime |
A primary email account is provided to you when you sign up. Primary email accounts
only expire if you'd cancel your 1USA subscription.. |
|
Mailbox |
Forwarding: A forwarding address or alias can be set to forward mail to another mailbox. You can also specify if a copy is to be kept or not in the current mailbox. In addition, this is accessible via the easy-to-use web management interface. |
|
Spooling |
Most email servers notify you only after 8 hours that the email address that you
typed in wasn't correct, or wasn't delivered for some reason. Some company email servers go down for 2 or 3 days
at a time. |
|
Auto-Replies |
If a person goes on a vacation or is going to be inaccessible otherwise, an auto-reply function can be activated where a user-specified message will be sent in reply to a message received. |
|
LDAP Server |
1USA Mail can act as an LDAP server, making it possible for LDAP-compliant applications to query the mail server for information. Basically, 1USA Mail can act as a Directory Service. |
|
Email Hosting for corporations |
Supports both IP-based and IP-less virtual domains when a corporation chooses 1USA
as their outsourced Email Service. Each virtual domain can be managed as totally independent entities, allowing
multiple domains containing the same mailbox names (such as "webmaster", "sales" or "info")
Clients may choose to delegate self-management of domains to customers or departments. |
|
Web interfaces for administrators |
The Web access allows for convenient remote management. Administrators can get to the server from any Internet connection with the Web Mail Manager, Java Console, and List Moderator interfaces. |
|
Security & Security Timer |
The web mail server includes User ID and Password login system, automatic browser
cache clearing, and password encryption. |
|
Address Book |
The WebMail interface has an Address Book to save your most-used email addresses. Very handy feature. |
|
Worldwide Multi-lingual Access |
Based around HTML, 1USA WebMail supports most popular browsers, so users can easily access their mailboxes on the road, at home or in the office. 1USA WebMail supports all national character sets for full mobility and multi-lingual access. |
|
Safe & Secure Email |
1USA WebMail includes several preventive security features including a User ID and Password login control system, an automated cache clearing system that wipes the browser cache when you log out, and password encryption. If you don't log out, you won't be able to log on again for 20 minutes. |
|
Java Console |
Similar to the Web Mail Manager, the Java Console offers some of the the same functionality. However, the Java Console also lets you manage your mailing lists as well. |
|
Web Mail Manager |
The Web Mail Manager is a utility used by users, domain owners and system administrators to manage individual mailboxes and domains. All the setting for a mailbox or a domain in the conventional windows interface are available in the Web Mail Manager. You can also put limits on what can be changed by a domain admin or a user via the security key system in VOP Mail. |
|
Java Console |
Similar to the Web Mail Manager, the Java Console offers some of the the same functionality. However, the Java Console also lets you manage mailing lists as well. The Java Console can be restricted using the same security keys as the Web Mail Manager. |
|
List Moderator |
A Web-Based utility is provided that allows you to moderate mailing lists remotely via the web. Only the list moderator of a particular list can moderate it using this utility. |
|
List Moderator |
A Web-Based utility is provided that allows you to moderate mailing lists via the
easy-to-use web interface. |
|
Text File Lists |
1USA Mail uses a text file that you provide for the membership list. This lets you write programs that can update that list periodically or import the list from other list-server software. |
|
Email List Processor |
Mailing lists can be controlled via an Email using the list command processor. This way, any subscription can be accepted or denied remotely by the designated moderators. |
|
Web-based Moderation |
This is our web-based mailing list moderation tool. It's useful for lists with relatively heavy traffic where moderation via Email becomes less practical. |
|
Automated Subscriptions |
SUBSCRIBE and UNSUBSCRIBE commands are processed either automatically or manually,
depending on the security level you want with your mailing list. The designated moderators can approve/deny access
to the list using the Email list processor. |
|
Customizable Messages |
Each list can have it's own customized Welcome, Goodbye and Help message. You can also add a prologue and a suffix to each message posted to the list. Each message can also include tags that correspond to certain variables like the user's username, the mailing list name, the date, etc ... |
|
Flexible Error Handling |
Mailing list bounce messages can be sent to the person who wrote the original message or to the mailing list moderators. |
|
Header Processing |
Using programming, Dynamic Headers let you customize the look of the mailing list header. Especially useful if you want a mailing list "tag" identifying the mailing list in the subject line for instance. |
|
Hooks for external processing |
An mail agent can be executed right before the message gets processed by the list processor. That lets you use your own C/C++ program to modify the content of the message to suit your needs. |
|
Security & Quotas |
There is a security system operating at 4 levels. The Moderator, the member, the new member and nonmembers. You can control who can post to the list, who can control the list, who can join/leave the list using this system. You can also set mailing list quotas in terms of list size and the total number of lists in a given domain. |
|
Digest Lists |
If you have high-traffic lists, some people would prefer to receive a digest. You can create a mailing list that is linked to another list where messages are accumulated for say, a week, and then sent in digest format to the members of the digest list. |

Limit relaying by IP |
By listing the IPs or blocks of IPs (Classes) that can route mail through the server,
preventing most of the relaying abuses. Used in conjunction with SMTP Authentication. |
|
Disable Relay for |
Disable relay from non-local users will prevent relaying by checking the "From:" field of the Email. If the sender does not belong to one of our hosted domains, the message is discarded. If a person gets on the list accidentally, 1USA Subscribers can ask to have it removed. |
|
Real Time Blacklist |
Prevents incoming SPAMs by looking up the sender address in the MAPS Real Time Blacklist. It automatically blocks messages from known relaying gateways. |
|
Reverse DNS lookup |
Checks the validity of the sender's address against the IP address they connected from. Since most spammers forge their address, it's a good way of bouncing inbound SPAMs and preventing them from filling up your mailbox. If a person gets on the list accidentally, 1USA Subscribers can ask to have it removed. |
|
Filter by Hostname |
Checks the source of the Email against a local blacklist of hostnames. If the source is on the list, we reject the message altogether. If a person gets on the list accidentally, 1USA Subscribers can ask to have it removed. |
|
Filter by IP address |
Prevents messages from being processed originating from certain IP Addresses, a more effective method of filtering. If an IP address gets on the list accidentally, 1USA Subscribers can ask to have it removed. |
|
Filter by Content |
Prevents messages from being imported and processed if they contain certain content in the header field. We can filter out those "Make Money Fast!" messages using this feature. |
|
Bulk-Mail Blocking |
Some bulk-mailers try to SPAM our server by trying hundreds of names from a standard name dictionary list. Since we can detect this by the number of invalid recipients, we can use this feature to block their attempts. |
|
SMTP Authentication |
If a 1USA Subscriber is connected to the internet from outside our "local" network and you still want to send emails through the 1USA Email Server, you can enable this feature in your email software. |
|
